Book Review: Love & War by John and Stasi Eldridge

about the book:

"LOVE & WAR shows couples how to fight for their love and happiness, calling men and women to step into the great adventure God has waiting for them together. Walking alongside John and Stasi Eldredge, every couple can discover how their individual journeys are growing into a story of meaning much greater than anything they could do or be on their own."

I had heard good things about Love & War by John and Stasi Eldredge before I actually received a copy for myself. Everything I'd heard had been positive, and yet I still wasn't quite sure this book would be for me. Well, to be more accurate, I wasn't sure this book would be for my marriage. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Love & War spoke to so many of the "issues" I find within my marriage. The situations that John and Stasi describe, are things that can be found in almost any marriage. Whether you have a good marriage, or a marriage in trouble, are recently married or have been married for years, you will find things in this book that speak to your situation. No relationship is perfect and Love & War lets you know that is not only OK, but that it is normal for all of us.

Knowing the book has a strong religious base, I was worried that it would be a bit too preachy for my liking. It really isn't. John and Stasi each share stories of their own marriage in a way that makes you feel as though you are having a chat with a trusted friend. They mix in humor and lighthearted tales with the truth and knowledge that they are sharing. It makes this book a joy to read, as well a fantastic tool for your marriage.

As I progressed through the book, I would read something and think about someone in my life who needed just that message right now. Through the first few chapters I found myself wanting to share what I was reading with my recently married niece. She and her new husband are struggling with the reality of marriage and I have tried to let her know that is normal. John and Stasi do a much better job of explaining that than I do. I would then find myself reading something that I wanted to share with another niece who seems so desperate to find a husband that she is not looking for the right man, whom she can share her life with. Marriage is such an important decision. Love & War relays the depth and impact this decision will have on you, and your spouse, brilliantly. There were many things that I immediately felt I needed to share with my husband as well. Honestly, there is no greater recommendation I can give a book than to want to share it with the people I love!
